Episode 1: Malaysia

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

Welcome to the first episode of Flights and Bites!

We are obsessed with Malaysia. All of our favorite cuisines somehow have been harmoniously combined, and every dish surprised us. There really is nothing else like this vibrant country. Listen to the podcast here to hear all about our experience and some tips we have for anyone thinking about making the journey to Malaysia. Enjoy!

Show notes

#1 Dish for Tara

Char Kuey Teow- Georgetown

Tara had this every single day in Georgetown! This guy in the photo said he had been selling from this cart on Love Street for 50 years, and we had his dish on our first Georgetown day, and as our final meal in Malaysia.

#1 Dish for IK

Lychee Drinks!

We had these at Thirty8 in Kuala Lumpur which is a bar on the 38th floor of a hotel near the KL towers. The view as the sun went down was AMAZING and we even got to see some base jumpers. Best of all of course was this Lychee cocktail!

Grilled Chicken Fish and Sting Ray - Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor

Grilled sting ray and chicken fish. We had these in Jalan Alor street stalls- they were drenched in a spicy, garlicky curry rub. That tomato sauce and a Tiger beer on the side- YUM!

Crab Boil- Langkawi

Crab, mussels and clams in golden seasoning. So dang good! I wish I knew what was in this seasoning blend.

Indian Buffet- Kuala Lumpur

This photo is from the Indian buffet we had in Kuala Lumpur, but amazing Indian food was everywhere! That is one of the best pieces of fried chicken we have ever had.

Pork slices- Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown

This was IK's #4. It was so good! We had it in a sandwich, just meat on bread after a few hours of shopping in China Town. I expected it to be tough and jerky-like but it was surprisingly tender.

Roti Canai- Langkawi

We didn't have a good photo of this dish, but here is what we were talking about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roti_canai

Stir fried oyster with egg- Georgetown

We had this while hiding from the rain and were pleasantly surprised. Not pictured, you could also get a plate of chicken skins!

Honorable Mentions

Durian- Kuala Lumpur

You have to try it!

Tamarind Springs- 20 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur

This was one of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had! You have to take a Grab about 20 minutes outside of KL but it is definitely worth it (plus Grabs in Malaysia are very affordable). The restaurant is perched up in the hills in the jungle and you dine in an open concept cabin-like building surrounded by vegetation and sounds of the animals. The cuisine is Thai and the cocktails were outstanding. Try the Tom Yum soup cocktail!

Hot Pot Cart- Georgetown

This cart was so cool! It is a build your own hot pot. You pick your ingredients and everyone stands around to cook it in the pots of broth.

That is a wrap for Malaysia. We loved it!
